Grant Competition
Grant writing can be fun!
As a final project for the Pathways to Community Leadership course, students work with a Hawaii based nonprofit and use their skills to write a grant proposal on behalf of the nonprofit. Students learn to use multiple skill sets including team collaboration, public speaking, creating a budget, research and interviewing.During the final week of class, students present their grant proposals to a panel of judges, parents and guests. The winning proposal is given a grant award by Ananda Fund Hawaii.
2022 Grant Competition Winners (July session)
First Place – $5,000
Mission: Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
Second Place – $3,000
Mission: Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs builds greater independence and quality of life for those in Hawaii with disabilities by training and teaming them with service dogs.
Third Place – $2,000
The mission of A`ali`i Mentoring aims to foster and cultivate mentoring relationships that support Hawaii’s young adults from under-resourced communities. With mentoring young adults can persevere and reach their post-secondary educational, career and personal aspirations.
2022 Grant Competition Winners (June session)
First Place – $5,000
The mission of Aloha Harvest is to rescue and deliver quality donated food to social service agencies that feed the hungry in Hawaii.
Second Place – $3,000
The mission of Kuleana Coral Restoration is restoring Hawaii’s coral reefs to cultivate resilient marine ecosystems, for the enrichment of the culture, environment, and economy of the people of Hawaii and for the world.
Third Place – $2,000
The mission of Pacific Gateway Center is to empower low-income residents, immigrants, refugees and other vulnerable populations to achieve self sufficiency through skill-building and access to opportunities while respecting cultural heritages.
2021 Grant Competition Winners
First Place – $5,000
The mission of the Hawaii H.O.M.E. Project is to improve and access to health care for Hawaii’s homeless, while increasing student and physician awareness and understanding of the homeless and their healthcare needs. The project was founded in August of 2005 and currently provides free medical services to sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals, through weekly student-run free clinics per at nine sites across Oahu. In addition to these clinics, we also utilize our mobile health van for outreach to other unsheltered homeless populations on Oahu and to provide special events for the keiki at the shelters.
Second Place — $3,000*
808 Cleanups is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit organization committed to restoring Hawaiʻi’s natural beauty by empowering volunteers to conduct decentralized cleanups from Mauka to Makai, responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s indigenous ecosystem through education, and building sustainable solutions with community partners. * Funded by Zilber Family Foundation
Third Place – $2,000*
The mission of Hawai’i Children’s Action Network is to build a unified voice educating and advocating for Hawaiʻi’s children. Our vision is that all of Hawaiʻi’s children are healthy, safe and ready to learn.
