Course Description:
Pathways to Community Leadership Gr. 9–12
What matters to YOU? Do you care about protecting our environment, wildlife conservation, food insecurity, helping global youth living in poverty, education and health for all, human rights? Have you followed social movements on social media? Want to do more than just click like on an insta or tiktok feed to promote social justice? Learn to align your values and strengths to build power to create change. This course will introduce you to tools including grantmaking, grant writing and the art of public narrative—how to tell your story and connect it to an audience who will be empowered to take action. You will think deeply about your role in solving the problems we face as a society and your role as a youth changemaker. Travel virtually to visit nonprofit organizations and interact with global leaders on several continents. In a fun and interactive environment, students will learn strategies for personal leadership and community organizing. As a final project student teams will write a grant proposal for a Hawaii nonprofit and compete for a monetary grant award from Ananda Fund Hawaii.
